MY DISABILITY WALKS BESIDE ME

It’s always with me. It’s with me when I wake up and it’s with me when I go to bed. It goes to work with me and comes on vacation with me.

My disability walks beside me. I have made peace with that.

I’ve learned to love it.

Love it for everything it has taught me, for everything it has given me.

It has tested me. It has made me realize I’m always stronger than I think.

I’ve learned about love and friendship, that people will love you for who you are regardless of your challenges, and that true love is never a burden.

It’s pushed me to never give up, to ask for help, to be vulnerable, and to be myself.

It has taught me not to be ashamed of things that are out of my control.

It has taught me not to be afraid.

I wish I could have learned the lessons some other way, but my disability has shaped me into the person I am, a person I’m proud to be.
